Quotation: “It was Hyde, after all, and Hyde alone, that was guilty. Jekyll was no worse; he woke again to his good qualities seemingly unimpaired; he would even make haste, where it was possible, to undo the evil done by Hyde. And thus his conscience slumbered” (81)
Comment: I chose this quote because of its implications. One of the main themes is duality of man and Dr. Jekyll even makes a point to note that it was his intention to discover the duality of the man that got him in this situation. Therefore, it strikes me as odd that when talking of the situation Jekyll completely distances himself from Hyde even going as far as to say that all of the wrongdoings done by Hyde are erased by Jekyll’s good deeds.
Question: With Stevenson’s exploration of the duality of man, do you think that he includes this almost absolution of Jekyll’s involvement in Hyde’s doings to say that though humans do bad things they can still remain good people?
