August 30th: Menon, Flood, and Evaristo

The three articles that we read all discuss different elements of the 2020 Booker Prize. While Flood explores the background of how prestigious the award can be, like having a former president attend the ceremony, Evaristo and Menon explore the inner workings of who was nominated. In Evaristo’s essay, she highlights how diversity has been a big problem for the Booker Prize and how it was important to highlight those who are normally overshadowed. She also dives into how the very diverse list of nominees this year are respectably nominated (something that has been highly debated)instead of receiving “charity” or being the benefactors of affirmative action. Menon also highlights this problem in the beginning of her reviews for the 2020 shortlist. She quickly draws attention to the fact that none of the nominees are straight, white, men nor are any of them British- something noteworthy as this is a British prize. Menon, however, goes on to highlight what actually makes a novel literary in order to combat the many complaints that this list of nominees was purely for diversity sake.
