In the beginning of the novel, the audience is made privy to a conversation between Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield where Mr. Enfield describes an instance of him seeing a man trample a little girl with no remorse. After being berated by angry witnesses, the assailant offers money to the aggrieved family. However, the most interesting part of this anecdote is that Mr. Enfield tells Mr. Enfield that he saw the man coming from an unmarked door with no bell or door knocker. This caught my attention. As we come to learn later, this assailant was Mr. Hyde and the metaphor of him coming out of an unmarked door highlights the secrecy of his personage.
