Learning Outcome: Employ techniques of active reading, critical reading, and informal reading response for inquiry, learning, and thinking
Intro:
When dealing with difficult texts, I break it down as much as physically possible. I start by sectioning off the paragraphs and then I begin to seek out all of the full stops. Once located, I make marks where the periods are to make it very obvious that there is a full stop there. This practice normally helps me separate the sentences from each other and stops them from running together and further jumbling in my head. After breaking it down, I highlight with different colours and annotate deeply. I use different colours for different meanings like vocabulary I don’t know, important points, and interesting factors in the text.
For a while I was not able to successfully break down difficult texts. Once I began to separate everything and break it down it became infinitely easier to digest. I feel it is all about making text more digestible in order for consumption. Once you feel you can understand it that is when you can finally begin to successfully annotate and comment on difficult texts.
Summary:
In the article, Wiener and Rivera discuss the issues of not having enough marine biology majors in the universities in Hawaii. With this huge sect of students missing it is virtually impossible for the islands ecological factors to be studied. They also explain that the kids that do go into marine biology do not get to experience the field. They are deprived of hands on learning which is an integral part of learning; especially a science like marine biology in a prime location like the Hawaii islands.
The girls introduce multiple solutions to these problems throughout the article. One possible solution could be partnering with other curriculum programs like cultural exchange programs in order to foster a positive learning environment in different communities so they can get out of their shell and learn new environments. They also introduced using interactive science tool demonstrations, such as the educational course called Moko o Lo’e that gives lectures on marine based topics with interactive labs to follow, which would negate the argument of possible lawsuits when bringing the university students out into the field. Lastly, they could use art to communicate biological concepts like painting murals about what they learned which would integrate art and science, a more creative and stress-free way to learn. Their solutions highlight the many possible ways to navigate the issues of hands on learning and the depletion of students joining the marine science major in Hawaii.

I annotated this text by reading over it first and then going back in. With the first reading, I was prepared to go in and annotate since I had a vague idea of what the text was about. It also seemed less daunting with an initial reading since I already knew what the article was going to be about and I could focus on really highlighting the important details.
